The county town of Herefordshire, Hereford is 20 miles away from Orleton Rise. A place steeped in history, having been around for almost 1,000 years, the town is filled with architecture, buildings and more that show its colourful past. No visit is complete without seeing Hereford Cathedral and the Chained Library, but you can also stop into the Hereford Cider Museum for the history of the popular drink. Don’t miss out on the chance to see Jacobean architecture up close with a visit to The Old House too.

Only 6 miles away from Orleton Rise is the market town of Ludlow. While small, Ludlow is home to its very own castle, dating back to the Norman conquest. It’s widely regarded as one of the finest examples of a ruined Medieval castle in Europe. Pay a visit to the 11th century church of St. Lawrence as well to complete the history tour. More of a food lover? Ludlow is also host to a range of food and music festivals throughout the year.

One of two towns that sit within the Shropshire Hills, Clun is a beautiful spot to visit – in fact, it is regarded as one of the most tranquil places in England – and only 20 miles from Orleton Rise! Visit Clun Castle, a Norman stone castle whose ruins are now used for outdoor fairs and events. Explore the original stone streets, pop into one of its highly recommended pubs for a local cider or stop off for a cream tea in the market square. Enjoy the quieter pace of life that still thrives in many of these rural towns and villages.

Also known as ‘Little Switzerland’, Church Stretton is 21 miles away from our park and located right in the heart of the Shropshire Hills. It earned its nickname from Victorian tourists who likened the town’s landscape to the Swiss Alps. Here you’ll find Carding Mill Valley, a popular starting point for walkers tackling trails along the Long Mynd. Golfers can also head to the 18-hole course just outside the town if they fancy getting some time on the green.

11 miles away from Orleton Rise is the stunning Hampton Court Castle. This beautiful example of 15th century architecture is part castle, part country house. Spend the day exploring the magnificent gardens, which includes water features, stunning plantation, a maze and a unique sunken garden. Finish your day with a snack in the Orangery Café or take part in an historic tour of the grounds.

Croft Castle and Parkland is just over 4 miles away, offering visitors the chance to see a well-preserved example of a Rococo-Gothic castle. To this day, the castle is still part occupied, but you can tour much of the building to see the wonderful art collections. For landscape lovers, the extensive parkland includes a 400-year-old avenue of sweet chestnut trees, and the Fishpool Valley is a stunning work of 18th century landscaping. You can also visit an Iron Age hill fort within the grounds, known as Croft Ambrey.
