Orleton Rise is in the heart of Shropshire: rolling hills, riverside walks, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
The neighbouring market town, Ludlow, has everything you could want for a Christmas getaway. Whether you’re here for a bustling break, or a wholesome family retreat, a Ludlow Christmas is the definition of festive.
What comes to mind when you hear ‘a traditional Christmas’? Christmas markets, pantomimes and carols by candlelight. Christmas in Ludlow has all the magic of a classic Christmas. In the historic market town, communities come together, and festivities are flowing.
Ludlow’s Christmas market on 18 December combines twinkling lights, handcrafted hauls and delicious yuletide treats for an undeniable day. Whether you’re shopping for stocking fillers or a seasonal foodie looking for some homemade goods, there’s no better place to start than Ludlow’s Christmas market.
If you catch the matinee or an evening showcase, the pantomime is a must at Christmas. Staying at Orleton Rise Park, Ludlow’s local theatre is right on your doorstep. Aladin, Jasmine and the Genie are taking to the stage from 9 to 31 December. You can cheer for Aladin, boo Jafar, and sing along to ‘A Whole New World’. If Alladin’s not your cup of tea, Ludlow Racecourse is showing Dick Whittington, 6 December, for a classic English folk tale in the name of Christmas.
It wouldn’t be Christmas without carols and candlelight. A Ludlow Christmas brings the twilight magic at local churches with St John’s Bella Acappella Christmas Concert on 13 December and St Laurence’s Christmas by Candlelight on 15 December. Choir songs, crowd-pleasers and Christmas tunes, what’s not to love?
Christmas truly comes alive when the whole family can enjoy the festivities together. Staying at Orleton Rise Park, with Ludlow town only a 15-minute drive away, you’re bucket list will be overflowing.
Ludlow Winter Festival is returning to Ludlow Castle from 28 – 30 November, bringing 3 days of Christmastime cheers, music and food to the heart of the town. The Castle also hosts a calendar of family fun, with carol singing and Santa’s grotto throughout December. Whether the adults want to sing some merry tunes or the kids want to meet Father Christmas and his reindeers, the castle is hosting it all.
Mark your diaries, from 1-14 December, Berwick House is hosting a Woodland Christmas. The Woodland Light trail illuminates the beautiful gardens, perfect for a family stroll, catch-up with friends or romantic date night. Warm-up from the winter walk with mulled wine, mince pies or a creamy hot chocolate. The Indoor Craft Market invites you inside the historic halls of Berwick house. The perfect time to do some Christmas shopping, with local traders offering an array of trinkets, food and festive fillers.
Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre is bringing the magic, with nature walks and Mammoth Santa trails on 28 December. Follow the elves and snowballs through the enchanting exhibition, say hi to the Ludlow mammoth, and finish the trail with a gift from Santa.
Christmas can mean more than traditional, family-fun activities. A Ludlow Christmas accommodates everyone, from those who want a delicious meal, to a boogie late at night.
At Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, the Christmas Party Night 12 and 13 December features a delicious sit-down 3 course meal, DJ and dance floor. You can even start the night off with a complimentary glass of bubbly. Ludlow Racecourse is also hosting a Christmas Party, rock ‘n’ roll style, with a 3-course meal, live bands and a disco. Why wait for New Years to dance the night away, when Ludlow Christmas is offering so much?
Ludlow Racecourse has the annual Christmas races, 3 December hosting the penultimate fixture for 2025, and 17 December welcoming the Tanners Christmas Races.
